In the morning we leave per car from sidewalkcafe ‘t Vat.
Once we cross the bridge into the Commewijne district, we enter a totally different region.
We make our first stop at Peperpot, a nature reserve along the East-West connection.
Our guide will take you on a small hike where there is much to see, the animals birds and plants that live in this nature reserve.
Then we get back on the bus towards Tamanredjo. A Javanese town with many warungs (Javanese restaurants).
We will have a Javanese lunch at one of the warungs there.
The guide will explain the options: like fried rice, noodles, teloh, bean curd, saoto, rice chicken or petjil.
The Javanese drink Dawet can also be ordered and the bright pink drink is very refreshing.
After lunch we continu to the Mariënburg former sugar plantation.
We drive via Alkmaar, where a lot of small-scale agriculture can be seen along the road.
When we arrive at Mariënburg, we meet one of the local guides.
He takes us over the former factory site and explains how everything used to look like.
With nice anecdotes and a lot of his own memories you get a good picture of this era.
After this we drive to the fortress New Amsterdam.
Optional visit of the museum is possible if opened.
