Tour to Raleigh Falls and Voltzberg
The Ralleigh Falls are located upstream along the Coppename river, one of the last uninhabited rivers on earth.
In December 2000, the Raleigh Falls and Voltz mountain (Voltzberg) were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
This is an ideal tour to enjoy the most beautiful and unspoiled scenery you could wish for, including climbing the breathtaking Voltz mountain. (or making a good attempt and enjoying a lovely but heavy jungle hike).
You can also enjoy spotting a wealth of animals, for birds alone 350 different species are to be found there, and as many as eight different species of monkeys for instance.
And f you are very lucky… even jaguars and puma’s have been spotted here.
The variety of plant and animal life is enormous.
In short, a must for every nature lover!
The first day of the tour we depart from Paramaribo center (sidewalkcafe ‘t Vat) to the maroon village Witagron.
From the airport (Zanderij) we take about 3 hours of unpaved road to get there, depending on road conditions of course.
Then we travel the local way, by Korjaal (vessel, sort of a big canoe with an outboard engine) towards the Raleigh Falls.
Once arrived at our accommodation on Fungu Island and everyone installed, there is normally a little time left to relax or take a dive before dinner.
On the second day you can enjoy a full program; which begins with a jungle hike that leads to the climbing of the 240 meter high Voltz moutain.
Accompanied by our guide and or a local guide there will be plenty to see and told on the road.
During the walk you can encounter animals of coures and hear them, especially the roar of the howler monkeys in the treetops above or around you is impressive.
The sounds, the smells, the sights, especially at the top will overwhelm.
On our way back from the mountain we will stop almost at the beginning of our hike and we will take a cool, replenishing and well deserved bath in the Anjumara Falls (named after the wolfs fish).
This is course if there are no electric eels to disturb us, but the guide will test the waters first of course.
On the third day we will have our visit to the mother fall on the program, a small paradise on earth.
Again, our guide and or the local guide will skillfully guide you through the woods.
And on this route especially there is plenty to tell (and enough breath for the guide to do so),
There are a lot of different types of palm trees and leaves and the guide will show you how they are used in every day life by maroons and Amerindians to make practical things out of or medicine.
To get there we start off with a 5 minute boat ride and about an hour of low pace hiking with plenty of stops.
The mother fall is a huge rapid (with a small drop) in the Coppename river.
Raleigh falls themselves are a series of rapids and the mother fall is the series of the biggest of them.
You will be allowed to bath in it if safety allows for this.
The guide will determine this on site.
Otherwise there is another lovely part of the river with a beach where you can take a dive after the hike.
On the 3 day tour we take our lunch (or take it with us in the boat) and continue our journey back by boat and bus to Paramaribo.
On the 4 day tour we will have one extra afternoon and evening to enjoy the location (Fungu Island has a little airfield (wonderful for bird spotting), a couple of small walks and some nice places to swim in the river, so there is plenty to enjoy and even 4 days will always still seem too short).
If you are interested to take a walk through the maroon village of Witagron, on the way there or back, or to make a stop along the road to visit an Amerindian village, you can always ask the guide.
