Browns mountain Nature Park is a natural reserve consisting of 8400 hectares of rain forest.
Due to its location you can visit it in one day, and go from Paramaribo city into deep rain forest, and back again after a nice hike to the waterfall(s).
After a thrilling climb up the mountain with a four wheel drive, there is some time for the viewpoints over the forest and the Brokopondo lake and a good lunch to prepare for the hike to the Leo and or Irene falls.
The most popular, most booked tour in Suriname. This place is highly appreciated by both locals and tourists.
Tour description:
The tour departs at 8:30 pm from ‘t VAT (note: this may vary because of weather and road conditions).
We depart by mini bus with air conditioning from the center of Paramaribo and pass some viewpoints along the way (eg central market)
After about 20 minutes we are through the morning traffic, and we continue our journey on the highway towards the warung (Javanese restaurant / cafetaria) at Suralco.
There we have a small breakfast we view the former bauxite processing plant and the guide will give further information about the history of bauxite in Suriname.
We continue our journey after a snack and a coffee towards the village of Brownsweg.
The bus stops here for a sanitary stop and our guide will give information on the transmigration village, its history and a bit of information on the locals (the Saramaccaner marroon tribe).
After that we climb the dirt road up the Browns mountain.
The climb by car is around eight kilometers.
Ususally it takes a little bit under an hour (depending on conditions). It can be pretty adventurous especially in the rain season.
When we arrive at the top of the mountain there is a phenomenal view over the Brokopondo reservoir.
After lunch and the viewpoints you will be given 2 bottles of water and some cookies or fruit for on the road.
And we will be ready to start our hike through the marvelous rain forest of Suriname accompanied by our guide or a local guide.
The paths are steep and can be slippery in some places, therefore it is important to bring proper shoes for the hike. The guides tells about the flora and fauna that we encounter.
The tour goes to the Leo waterfall standard. This is about a 3 quarters to an hour down. In the dry season there can be less water, or sometimes not any at all if it has been a long drought.
However you will be given the option to continue to the Irene waterfall and descend for about an hour more. This waterfall is breathtaking, especially in the rain season when it has plenty of water.
You will have the option to take pictures, bath or shower underneath the waterfalls and cool down a little bit. After about 20 minutes at the fall we will go back up again. And after that it is back to Paramaribo again.
We aim to arrive there 19:00 hours. It can be a bit later, depending on the road and how much the group in total wants to walk.
