In the 1960s, approximately 1560 square km of tropical rain forest was flooded for the energy supply of the bauxite processing plant Suralco.
This lake is central in this tour.
We take a cruise on the lake where jagged petrified tree trunks rise above the water and enjoy the beautiful view of the hilly area of the Browns mountain nature park.
Ston Island
In the morning we leave from Paramaribo via the fully paved road towards the transmigration village of Brownsweg.
On the road we stop at the former Suralco bauxite processing plant for coffee and some snacks.
The next stop is Brownsweg with its highlights, the history of transmigration villages and the modern day gold industry.
After this we have a little bit of unpaved road ahead till we reach our destination: Ston Island.
This beautiful peninsula located on the Brokopondo Reservoir is one of the most highly regarded places in Suriname and very popular with the locals.
Here we will have lunch, there is opportunity to swim and fishing rods can be rented for piranha fishing.
And of course, complete relaxation in a beautiful ambiance.
The resort also rents out canoes and kayaks to go on the lake.
At the end of the afternoon we return to Paramaribo and are back around 18:00 hours.
